Character Creation Rules and Restrictions Empty Character Creation Rules and Restrictions

Sat Feb 25, 2023 4:46 am
Greetings, Citizen! Welcome to Terameya's orbital customs station! Please submit all your official paperwork to a customs officer and have your picture ID ready. Please note that due to quarantine procedures, shuttles to Terameya are currently one-way only until the quarantine has been lifted. We hope you enjoy your stay!

If this is your first time making a character, it is highly recommended reading this guide, and ask questions on discord if you need further guidance.

Certain Mechanics are here to allow advanced players a higher degree of specialization. If you are new to the game, you may want to skip these until you have a greater grasp on character creation. That being said, you are welcome to try and implement these systems with your characters if you wish. Any non-mandatory mechanics will be marked as {Advanced}

Ability Scores
Infinitum uses 25 Point Buy for characters. Please note your pre-racial scores somewhere on your sheet so the GMs can see it.

Gestalt {Advanced}
Warning: Gestalting moreso than anything else, is a fairly complicated feature. If you don't understand what Gestalting is or how it works, skip this section. It will only confuse you. Gestalting rules can be found here.
Gestalted characters are allowed but are not necessary. In order to keep everyone on a vaguely even playing field, gestalt is handled as follows:

Each side of Gestalt is tracked together. So if you level up, you level both classes.

Gestalting does have limitations. You may not gestalt or multiclass two classes that use different forms of casting. So a wizard[eliciter] is a no-go.

Permitted Races

Any of the Core or Standard races are permitted. Advanced Races are banned with the following exceptions:

Permitted Advanced Races

Drow (Common, not Noble)
Tengu
Kasatha
Vishkanya

As the story progresses, more races will surely be discovered and the permitted races list will grow.

Permitted Custom Races:
Tibbit

Any races beyond those permitted and not specifically on the list may be applied for as a Custom Application. Keep in mind that most races with innate magic will likely be denied for the time being.

Classes
All Non Third Party Classes are permitted with some few exceptions.

Banned Classes
Summoner
Oracle
Soul Weaver
Inquisitor
Unchained Summoner
Paladin
Wraith
Cleric

Again, note that classes may be unlocked as the story progresses. These classes just don't fit the story as it stands currently.

Magic Classes and Classes with Magic:
Please note the rules on which Magic operates before picking your classes. While Wizard is a permitted class, a Human Wizard not implanted with an Infinity Chip will be about as useful as a bucket with a hole in it.

Bypassing the Magic Rules:
Players may make a Custom Application, explaining how an [su] or [sp] could be achieved via futuristic technology. If the application is accepted, the ability will be changed to [ex], will no longer be vulnerable to Infinity Fallout, and will be listed on the Non-Magical Abilities list, which will allow future players to use it without an application. Each accepted entry will also reward its creator 15 IP.

Spells on any spell list cannot be bypassed.

Permitted Third Party {Advanced}

The Elephant in the Room
We use the Elephant in the Room rules to mitigate feat taxes. We only use the linked page, not the full PDF.

Traits and Flaws {Advanced}
Characters may have up to 2 traits, which must each have an effect on a separate stat. (No MinMaxing a single stat). Characters may not take regional or campaign traits.
A Minor Flaw may be taken to give the character a third trait
A Major Flaw may be taken to give the character an extra feat at Character Creation. (Please note that you must have the ability to cast spells in order to take spellcasting related drawbacks)

The "Land Legs" drawback in this setting applies to any ship. This includes Spaceships, Airplanes, Helicopters, and normal ships.

The Extra Stuff

Starting Level
All characters start at level 1

Wealth
Starting wealth is max for your class. You may use the starting wealth for your class or for your background occupation, whichever is higher.

Background Occupation
Characters have a background. This can either be what you did before you became an adventurer, or what you do to earn the rent while not out adventuring. You may change the name of a background to something similar. Just don't try and claim that you got the soldier's Light Armor Proficiency by being a farmer. You may replace the feat granted by the background occupation with a feat of your choice.

Background Skills
Are implemented.

Hero Points are implemented. You can alternatively choose to be an anti-hero to receive no hero points and get an extra feat

XP Progression:
Medium

Character Bios
As a final note, every character in Infinitum needs to have a Bio within the Census. This can be as simple as your character's name and age. However, detail is encouraged. More information can be found on the Census page
