Magic within Infinitum

So you want to be a wizard? So does everyone, as a kid. Everyone wishes they were a dragon, soaring through the skies and generally ignoring the laws of physics. But such dreams quickly die.... or they used to. Thanks to Neuromass Technologies new Infinity Chip^tm any qualified participant can use magic.

Magic. Magic is....complicated. As the non-magical races ventured into civilized space for the first time, they noticed that some of the other races they encountered were able to, for all intents and purposes, break the laws of physics. Without consequences. This led to curiosity and a large number of studies involving these races, but no underlying cause could be found. However, as more and more magical races were found, the non-magical races grew ever-so-wary. To be sure, they had an alliance, but no alliance, in no culture, had lasted forever. And so the development of the Infinity Chip began.

Decades and millions of credits later, the chip is made....sort of. There are still issues with how magic and technology interacts. But 99.9% of the time, the chip works without killing the user. However, normally mundane races are not able to simply break the laws of physics at the drop of a hat. After the chip is installed, it takes time, research, and practice in order to start wielding the powers of the Infinity Chip.

For the average person, there are two ways one can begin to study magic when they have an infinity chip. The first? Reseach it on your own. "Hackers" exist everywhere, studying the Infinity chip and figuring out how harness its powers for themselves. This can be somewhat random, and like alchemists of eld, while you'll rarely find what you're looking for, you might find nothing of import.....or perhaps you'll find something more valuable than expected.

However, research and adventure are not for everyone. After all, you have to work and put food on the table, and the Infinity chip is a tool, meant to facilitate that. Therefore, many companies have Infinity Chips that are sold along with long term subscription packages, wherein their researchers will teach you how to best harness your particular brand of Infinity Chip. These packages, or "Spheres" as they are more commonly known, teach very specific courses that vary little from their intended function, usually instead enhancing something they do well already. The trade-off is worth it though, as you're able to pick your exact area of study, and don't have to risk not learning what it is you set out to learn.

There are two ways to acquire an Infinity Chip.

The first is to sign a contract with Neuromass technologies. In a similar contract to most college educations in Infinitum, you obtain an infinity chip and training in a "Sphere" of your choice, in exchange for being tied to assisting them in their research for the next 20 years or until they release you from the contract.

The Second is to purchase the chip for 50Ȼ with no training and become what is known as a "Spellhacker" researching your own spells. Some with martial training choose not to spellhack, instead learning to manipulate the chip in subtle ways to enhance their own prowess. One way or another, after the initial purchase, you have no further relations with Neuromass (Not even technical support, so be careful about fiddling with that chip too much)
