Current Technology Empty Current Technology

Sat Feb 25, 2023 4:17 am
So, you've just suffered from a memory wipe, or you've been lost in the wilds for the past 40 years? Maybe you just need a referesher on what great inventions we have serving us in the modern day? Look no further, we at Gendai Innovations are here to help!

As to be expected, technology in a sci-fi world looks significantly different than that of a fantasy or even modern setting. Infinitum uses certain inventions as core parts of it's society, and this should serve as a general guide to the level of technology that is being operated at, as well as explain a few specific bits of technology.

General Level of Technology

It goes something like this. Space Travel is common, screens are holograms, hovercraft are in, and robots are common. Ai has yet to be successfully developed and results in imperfect and sometimes unpredictable results. Nanobots are in your everything and everywhere and may or may not be recording you. Terraforming is an imperfect technology. Medicine is significantly advanced and lifespans are longer, but not astronomically. Death still sucks. Cloning exists, but is imperfect and has all kinds of moral implications, but at least it still sells. Guns can shoot bullets but also lasers, and armor still won't save you from an orbital strike. Welcome to the Future.

The N-Drive

The N-Drive is a fascinating piece of technology that every nation uses, although no one knows how it works. Every nation has the same story. They found a crashed alien ship, found the N-Drive within it, and reverse engineered it. None of the ships were manned, but each was of different make. Elves found a Draconic Ship, as did Dwarves. The Adapted found an Elven ship. Humans found an Adapted ship, and so on. None of these nations has record of the crashed ships ever being launched, and the Dragons have never found where their crashed ship originated from in the first place, despite being the first of the known races to have achieved interstellar travel. (Followed very nearly by the Elves, much to Draconic chagrin, who would rather be left alone and have the galaxy to themselves.)

The N-Drive seemingly works by compressing the space it's traveling through.....or by increasing the speed of that which travels through its bubble..... No one is sure exactly. However, even light passes through it faster, and the compression (or speed) increases exponentially the farther from a gravity well the N-Drive is. A journey of 5000 light years with the best propulsion drive known the intelligent life traveling at .1 C, has made the trip with the N-Drive in 9 days and 2 hours, galactic time. Scientists have hypothesized many reasons for this, but still have been unable to figure out mechanically how the N-Drive works. They are merely able to duplicate it. One way or another, it has drastically changed travel and opened a new world of possibilities.

Fun Fact: It is not uncommon for people to report seeing figures at the corner of their vision while in N-Space or reporting feeling watched. Psychologists have dubbed the phenomena "Quasi-space Paranoia" and Pharmaceutical companies make a fortune on sedatives and nerve suppressants at spaceports with ships traveling through N-Space.

Fun Fact 2: N-Space is unnerving, with light and dark reversed and contrast heavily increased, as though a photo were using negative color. Thus its dubbing of "Negative-Space". For this reason, ships are often painted and decorated in opposite colors, with light grey floors and occasionally black lights, so that N-Space can feel as normal as possible for it's passengers.

The EPC (Extra Planetary Communication) Net

The Futuristic internet of Infinitum, seeing as information cannot be fitted with an N-Drive, live chats cannot occur off-planet. As such, a system was instead developed so that any ship leaving a system would download data from the limited number of EPC sites, and then upload that data to it's destination when it arrived. The system is by no means perfect, but it has kept the galaxy connected. Within systems, satellites keep a constant stream of data traveling between planets.   It's not instant by any means, but again, everything is connected.

The EPC net keeps transfer sizes down by only having 2 sites available.

The Arclight forums: The largest method of interplanetary communication beyond simply writing letters or sending videos. The Arclight forums host a category on nearly any subject under the suns, with any user able to make a thread. Threads are deleted after a year to save space, but can be downloaded if desired at any time.

Gwynnslist!: Gwynnslist beat out a popular competitor of a similar name thanks to a particularly virulent lawsuit which resulted in a black eye, a divorce, and 7 arrests. Gwynnslist is where people can tout their skills as a contractor, write job postings, or just look for local events in their area. Similar to Arclight, threads there are deleted after a year or when the thread has been marked as resolved.

Fun Fact: The creator of the EPC net, and by extension the company he formed to run it, tried to brand it the EPIC net, but the name never caught on, due to how excessively cringy it is. That didn't stop him from trying, and long after his death, his company still brands the product as EPIC! Net.

Fun Fact 2: Rumor has it that the EPCnet has been hacked and a third site added to it. This has been dismissed by the company multiple times, but the rumor persists. Apparently, all you need is to know a guy.
